McConnell To Miss Key Event, GOP Frustrated

The GOP still remains divided heavily over McConnell.

Sen. Mitch McConnell will miss Kentucky’s famous Fancy Farm picnic for the first time in more than four decades as the longtime Republican lawmaker continues recovering from a serious fall, creating new questions about his return to the Senate during a critical stretch for Congress.

The annual Fancy Farm picnic is one of Kentucky’s largest political gatherings and has long served as a major event for elected officials from both parties. McConnell’s absence marks a significant break from a tradition he has maintained for more than 40 years.

The 84-year-old senator was recently released from the hospital after falling at his Washington, D.C., home in June. He is now receiving treatment at a rehabilitation facility, where doctors say he continues an intensive physical therapy program.

The Capitol’s Office of the Attending Physician said McConnell has not yet received medical approval to return to his Senate responsibilities or begin making public appearances again.

In a statement released Monday, McConnell said he is working hard to recover but will be unable to attend this year’s Fancy Farm picnic because of his ongoing rehabilitation.

“There is no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the people of western Kentucky,” McConnell said. He reflected on attending the event for more than four decades and noted how dramatically the region has changed politically.

“When I first attended 42 years ago, Republicans were in the minority,” he said. “Today, western Kentucky is overwhelmingly conservative. I hate missing this year’s gathering, but I wish everyone at St. Jerome Catholic Church a successful event.”

Physicians said McConnell is undergoing several physical therapy sessions each day as part of an intensive rehabilitation program designed to restore his strength and improve his mobility. They also noted that the senator’s childhood experience with polio has contributed to the challenges surrounding his recovery.

McConnell’s continued absence is also being felt on Capitol Hill.

Senate Republicans currently hold a narrow 15-14 majority on the Senate Appropriations Committee. Without McConnell’s vote, Republicans cannot advance spending bills unless at least one Democrat joins them.

That has slowed progress on several key government funding measures as lawmakers work toward federal budget deadlines.

Democrats have so far declined to support moving annual spending bills forward while negotiations continue between Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Susan Collins, R-Maine, and the committee’s top Democrat, Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, over overall spending levels for defense and domestic programs.

McConnell has made clear that returning to the Senate remains his goal, but his physicians say additional rehabilitation is necessary before he can safely resume his duties.

For now, Senate Republicans will continue navigating a razor-thin majority while awaiting the longtime Kentucky senator’s return at a time when Congress faces major decisions on federal spending and other legislative priorities.
