The GOP is happy about one thing.
Republicans are increasingly optimistic about their chances in the Michigan Senate race after progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed emerged as a major figure in one of the most important battles of the 2026 midterm elections.
Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), argued Sunday that El-Sayed’s candidacy could make it easier for Republicans to win the critical Senate seat in November.
“I’m certain that Abdul El-Sayed is making it easier,” Scott told CNN’s Manu Raju.
Scott argued that El-Sayed’s political record does not match the views of many Michigan voters, including independents and moderates who could ultimately decide the election.
The South Carolina Republican specifically highlighted El-Sayed’s positions involving police funding, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and border policy.
“He’s just wrong for Michigan,” Scott said.
The comments signal that Republicans intend to make El-Sayed’s progressive record a central issue as the battle for control of the U.S. Senate intensifies.
GOP Sees Major Opportunity in Michigan Senate Race
Michigan has become an important political battleground, and Republicans believe El-Sayed gives them an opportunity to draw a sharp contrast on immigration, public safety, foreign policy and the economy.
GOP advertisements have already attempted to portray El-Sayed as outside Michigan’s political mainstream, with some describing him as the “most dangerous” candidate in the contest.
Republican advertisements have also used El-Sayed’s full name, Abdulrahman Mohammed El-Sayed.
CNN asked Scott whether the decision to emphasize his full name was intended as an indirect reference to El-Sayed’s Muslim faith.
Scott rejected that interpretation.
“Not at all,” he said.
Scott maintained that the Republican message is based on El-Sayed’s own previous statements.
“He says he’s the ‘most dangerous candidate’ you can find,” Scott said. “He’s right. We should trust his words, not ours.”
However, the context surrounding that quotation is important.
El-Sayed’s “I’m pretty damn dangerous” remark was originally aimed at Democratic establishment leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. El-Sayed was presenting himself as a political threat to the party establishment, not making a statement about violence or public safety.
Republicans are nevertheless using the comment as part of their broader argument that El-Sayed represents the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Trump Turns His Attention to El-Sayed
President Donald Trump has also entered the political fight.
Trump posted an image Saturday showing himself with first lady Melania Trump alongside another photograph featuring El-Sayed and his wife.
“Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s,” Trump’s post declared.
The message highlighted the dramatically different political visions being presented to voters ahead of the November midterm elections.
CNN’s Jake Tapper questioned El-Sayed about Trump’s post during a Sunday appearance on “State of the Union.”
El-Sayed responded by agreeing that the two men represent different visions for the country — but he attempted to turn Trump’s criticism to his advantage.
The Michigan Democrat argued that his campaign represents Americans concerned about raising families and building a financially secure future.
He then challenged Trump over the economy.
“Can you afford your gas? Can you afford your groceries?” El-Sayed asked.
He also questioned whether parents believe their children will have greater economic opportunities than they had.
That response offers a preview of the competing messages voters are likely to hear repeatedly before Election Day.
Republicans want the campaign focused on El-Sayed’s progressive policies. El-Sayed wants voters focused heavily on household expenses and economic conditions.
Immigration and Police Policies Could Become Major Issues
Public safety and immigration are likely to become particularly important parts of the Republican campaign against El-Sayed.
Scott accused the Democrat of supporting policies that would “defund police” and “defund ICE,” while also attacking his approach to America’s border.
Those issues could play an important role as Republicans attempt to win independent voters and Democrats who disagree with the party’s progressive wing.
El-Sayed and his supporters, meanwhile, are likely to challenge Republican descriptions of his positions and argue that GOP campaign advertising does not provide voters with the full context of his policy agenda.
That disagreement means voters can expect immigration, border security and law enforcement to remain major subjects in the Michigan Senate race.
El-Sayed’s Foreign Policy Views Draw GOP Scrutiny
Foreign policy is emerging as another significant dividing line.
El-Sayed strongly opposes the Iran war and has been an outspoken advocate for Palestinian rights.
He has also criticized political campaigns receiving financial backing from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, better known as AIPAC.
Scott indicated that Republicans plan to scrutinize those positions and suggested the GOP will portray El-Sayed as sympathetic toward Hamas.
That is a serious political accusation, and El-Sayed has rejected attempts to associate his views with support for terrorism.
Republicans are also focusing attention on El-Sayed’s association with left-wing commentator Hasan Piker.
Piker faced widespread criticism over a past remark saying the United States “deserved” the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Piker subsequently disavowed the comment.
El-Sayed has condemned it as well.
During a Sunday appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” El-Sayed called Piker’s comment a “dumb statement” and explicitly rejected the underlying sentiment.
“America didn’t deserve 9/11,” El-Sayed said.
He argued that candidates should be judged by their own words and actions rather than controversial statements made by other political figures or commentators.
Republicans Believe El-Sayed Gives Them an Opening
The escalating attacks demonstrate just how important Michigan could be in determining control of the Senate.
Scott and national Republicans appear prepared to make the race a broader referendum on the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
Their strategy is increasingly clear: highlight El-Sayed’s positions on immigration, policing, Israel, Iran and other divisive issues while arguing that his political philosophy is too far to the left for Michigan.
El-Sayed has a different strategy.
Rather than allowing Republicans to define the election entirely around his progressive record, he is trying to shift voters’ attention toward the cost of living, grocery bills, gasoline prices and economic opportunity.
That could make Michigan one of the clearest ideological battles of the 2026 midterm elections.
Michigan Could Help Decide Control of the Senate
For voters, the stakes extend well beyond one candidate.
Every competitive Senate contest could matter in determining which party controls the chamber and therefore has greater influence over legislation, federal spending, judicial confirmations and President Trump’s agenda.
That makes Michigan a race national Republicans and Democrats cannot afford to ignore.
Scott clearly believes Democrats have handed Republicans a political opportunity with El-Sayed.
Whether Michigan voters agree will be decided in November.
Until then, expect Republicans to keep El-Sayed’s progressive record front and center while Democrats attempt to make economic concerns and the cost of living the defining issues of the election.
