Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pulling out some of the biggest weapons in her political arsenal as a bitter Democratic battle erupts over the future of her longtime San Francisco congressional seat.
Pelosi has thrown her considerable political influence behind San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan, who is trying to defeat California state Sen. Scott Wiener in the November election.
What might ordinarily have been a local race between two Democrats has instead developed into a high-stakes struggle involving Pelosi’s legacy, organized labor, major donors and the future direction of one of America’s most liberal cities.
While President Donald Trump and Republicans battle Democrats nationally, Pelosi is facing a political fight much closer to home.
And she isn’t sitting this one out.
Pelosi Goes All-In Against Scott Wiener
Pelosi is doing considerably more than simply endorsing Chan.
The former House speaker has reportedly tapped her extensive fundraising operation and network of Democratic powerbrokers to strengthen Chan’s campaign.
Politico reported that Pelosi has organized several high-dollar fundraising events for Chan, helped line up influential endorsements and made one of her senior political advisers available to assist the campaign.
For a politician who spent decades building relationships throughout Washington and California, those connections could give Chan a significant boost heading toward November.
But Pelosi’s aggressive involvement also demonstrates how important the outcome appears to be to the former speaker.
The congressional seat isn’t just another Democratic district.
It is part of Pelosi’s political legacy.
AI Chatbot Controversy Turns Race Ugly
Tensions exploded into public view following a controversy involving an artificial intelligence chatbot associated with Wiener’s campaign.
The chatbot was designed to imitate Chan but came under heavy criticism over responses accused of invoking racial and gender stereotypes.
Pelosi joined California Rep. Zoe Lofgren and other Democratic women in condemning the campaign tactic.
Their objection centered on the dangers of artificial intelligence being used to create statements supposedly coming from female political candidates.
Wiener subsequently apologized.
His campaign agreed to remove both the chatbot and billboards promoting it, with Wiener acknowledging that the controversy was distracting voters from the larger issues facing San Francisco.
The apology, however, did little to settle the broader political feud.

Perhaps one of the clearest indications of Pelosi’s determination came from her reported outreach to legendary labor and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta.
Huerta had endorsed Wiener.
Pelosi reportedly personally contacted her and attempted to persuade her to abandon that endorsement and support Chan instead.
It didn’t work.
Huerta remained with Wiener.
The unsuccessful effort nevertheless illustrates the extraordinary lengths Pelosi appears willing to go to help her preferred candidate.
Pelosi’s involvement also includes a powerful fundraising network developed during decades at the highest levels of Democratic politics.
That could become increasingly important as the November contest intensifies.
Why Pelosi Wants Connie Chan
Pelosi says her support is about more than political loyalty.
Chan has close relationships with organized labor, an important constituency in San Francisco politics and one that has historically enjoyed strong connections with Pelosi.
Chan’s election would also carry historic significance.
She could become the first Asian American member of Congress representing San Francisco, a city with a large and politically important Asian American population.
Pelosi has additionally raised concerns about declining female representation among the Bay Area’s congressional delegation.
Those are the public arguments for Chan.
Behind them, however, is a political rivalry that has been developing for years.
Wiener Has Clashed With Pelosi’s Allies
Wiener has taken positions on housing and development that have sometimes placed him in conflict with organized labor and other political constituencies closely associated with Pelosi.
He has championed efforts to accelerate housing construction in a state struggling with high housing costs and limited supply.
His support from real estate interests has simultaneously made him a controversial figure among some factions of San Francisco’s political left.
Those policy disagreements are now colliding with an even more personal dispute: exactly when Wiener decided to pursue Pelosi’s congressional seat.
Did Wiener Move Against Pelosi Too Soon?
Some Pelosi allies were reportedly angered by Wiener’s decision to begin pursuing a congressional campaign before Pelosi had announced whether she intended to seek another term.
Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown has offered his own account of what happened.
Brown, who has long been a Pelosi ally and Chan supporter, said Wiener told him during a lunch meeting that he did not plan to challenge Pelosi or enter the race before she announced her own plans.
According to Brown, Wiener announced his congressional campaign approximately one week later.
Wiener emphatically denies Brown’s version of events.
He has called the former mayor’s account a fabrication and accused Brown of behaving like a political operative.
The competing stories add another personal dimension to an already contentious race.
Wiener Says Pelosi Has Taken Over Chan’s Campaign
Wiener isn’t pretending Pelosi’s involvement is insignificant.
He has openly accused the former speaker of effectively taking control of Chan’s campaign.
Wiener argues that his own operation remains independent and has substantial grassroots support.
And he has one major result he can point to.
Wiener finished first in California’s top-two primary.
That doesn’t guarantee victory in November, but it demonstrates that Pelosi’s preferred candidate faces a serious fight.
For years, a Pelosi endorsement could send an unmistakable message about who held the advantage inside San Francisco’s Democratic establishment.

Trump and Republicans Can Watch From the Sidelines
President Trump doesn’t need to intervene in this fight.
San Francisco Democrats are battling among themselves.
The larger national contrast is difficult to miss: while Trump and Republicans focus on their own agenda in Washington and the November elections nationwide, one of the most famous figures in Democratic politics is investing significant political capital in determining who succeeds her back home.
Pelosi clearly wants Chan.
Wiener clearly isn’t backing down.
And after finishing first in the primary, he has reason to believe he can win despite the political establishment lining up against him.
Pelosi’s Political Legacy Is on the Line
That may ultimately be what makes this congressional race so fascinating.
Pelosi isn’t simply endorsing another Democrat.
She is putting her name, connections, fundraising operation and decades of political relationships behind Chan.
If Chan wins, Pelosi will have demonstrated that her influence over San Francisco Democratic politics remains formidable even after stepping away from House leadership.
If Wiener wins, the result could be interpreted as evidence that the city is moving beyond the political machine Pelosi spent decades building.
Either way, November could deliver an important verdict.
Nancy Pelosi was once powerful enough to help determine the direction of the entire House Democratic caucus.
Now she is fighting to influence what happens in her own political backyard.
And this time, even Pelosi’s legendary network may not guarantee that she gets the outcome she wants.
