Trump wins again!
President Donald Trump scored a significant victory in his ongoing Kennedy Center battle Thursday after the institution’s board approved a new inscription recognizing his role in the historic performing arts center’s restoration and renovation.
The decision comes after months of legal and political fighting over whether Trump’s name could appear on the Washington, D.C., landmark honoring former President John F. Kennedy.
Under the newly approved plan, the Kennedy Center would keep its existing name while adding an inscription beneath it reading:
“Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump.”
The move gives Trump prominent recognition at the Kennedy Center without formally renaming the institution—a key distinction following an earlier federal court ruling that blocked the board from changing the center’s congressionally established name.
Kennedy Center Board Approves Trump Inscription
The Kennedy Center board approved the inscription Thursday as officials move forward with plans for a major renovation of the famous performing arts complex.
The board has previously argued that Trump deserves recognition for his efforts involving the future of the center.
After an earlier attempt to add Trump’s name to the institution ran into legal trouble, board members directed officials to pursue lawful alternatives for recognizing what they described as the president’s extraordinary contributions to the center.
Thursday’s decision appears designed to accomplish that objective without removing President Kennedy’s name from the institution.
Instead, Trump’s name would appear in connection with the building’s restoration and renovation.
That difference could become important if opponents once again challenge the board’s actions in federal court.
Trump Previously Lost Kennedy Center Court Fight
The latest development follows a major setback for Trump earlier this year.
The Kennedy Center board voted in December to add Trump’s name to the institution alongside Kennedy’s. Trump’s name was subsequently placed on the building’s marble facade.
Opponents challenged the decision.
In May, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, an Obama appointee, determined that the Kennedy Center board lacked the legal power to rename on its own a memorial whose name had been established by Congress in honor of President Kennedy.
Cooper ruled that because Congress originally established the Kennedy Center’s name, any official change to that name would also require congressional action.
Trump’s name was later removed from the building, while references to the president connected to the disputed naming change were removed from the Kennedy Center’s online platforms.
The Kennedy Center has appealed the ruling.
Trump Gets Recognition Without Renaming Kennedy Center
The new inscription takes a different approach from the proposal that Cooper blocked.
Rather than changing the official name of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the board would recognize Trump specifically for the center’s restoration and renovation.
Kennedy’s name therefore remains intact.
That could give the board a stronger argument that it is commemorating Trump’s involvement with the building rather than attempting to rename a congressionally designated memorial.
However, whether that distinction will withstand another legal challenge remains uncertain.
Democrat Joyce Beatty Condemns Decision
Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, quickly criticized the latest move.
Beatty is an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center board and previously brought a successful legal challenge involving the board’s earlier actions.
She accused Trump’s allies of attempting to work around the federal court decision.
“This latest development is a transparent effort to circumvent the Court’s ruling, and flies in the face of the statutes that Congress passed,” Beatty said.
She also vowed to continue fighting over the future of the Kennedy Center, calling the institution a treasured national monument.
Her response makes clear that Thursday’s vote may not end the controversy.
Kennedy Center Preparing for Two-Year Renovation
The Trump inscription wasn’t the board’s only major decision.
Trustees also voted to close the Kennedy Center’s main building for approximately two years while extensive renovations are carried out.
That plan renews another proposal that previously encountered legal obstacles.
The renovation could become one of the most consequential changes to the Kennedy Center in decades, affecting performances, operations and the future appearance of one of Washington’s most recognizable cultural landmarks.
The institution has hosted generations of musicians, actors, dancers and other performers since opening in 1971.
Trump Has Dramatically Reshaped Kennedy Center Leadership
The controversy surrounding Trump’s name is part of a much larger transformation at the Kennedy Center.
After returning to the White House, Trump removed members of the institution’s traditionally bipartisan board and replaced them with allies.
Trump was then selected to serve as chairman.
The overhaul triggered an intense debate over the mission and political direction of the performing arts center.
Trump and his supporters have argued that major changes were necessary at an institution they believe had moved away from mainstream American cultural values.
Critics contend that the changes have injected politics into an organization intended to serve as a national center for the performing arts.
Those competing views have helped turn what might ordinarily have been an institutional management dispute into a much larger political and cultural fight.
Why Thursday’s Kennedy Center Vote Matters
The latest vote is significant because it potentially provides Trump with something his supporters have sought for months: permanent recognition on the Kennedy Center building.
The federal court ruling prevented the board from simply changing the institution’s official name without congressional authorization.
An inscription commemorating a president’s role in restoring or renovating a federal landmark presents a different legal question.
That doesn’t guarantee the new language will survive a challenge. Opponents could still ask a court to determine whether the inscription violates federal law or conflicts with the Kennedy Center’s status as a memorial to President Kennedy.
For now, however, the board is moving forward.

Thursday’s decision hands Trump a new victory following his earlier defeat in federal court, but it probably won’t be the final chapter.
The Kennedy Center’s appeal remains unresolved, Beatty has vowed to continue fighting the board’s actions, and the proposed two-year renovation could generate additional scrutiny.
The dispute also raises a larger question about who ultimately controls the identity and direction of one of America’s most prominent cultural institutions: Congress, the Kennedy Center’s leadership or the president-appointed board overseeing it.
For Trump supporters, the inscription represents recognition for a president who has made reshaping the Kennedy Center one of his administration’s cultural priorities.
For opponents, it represents another front in their effort to prevent Trump’s name from becoming permanently associated with the memorial.
Either way, after months of courtroom defeats and political resistance, Trump has found a new path to getting his name back on the Kennedy Center.
