Will American voters actually fall for this? Let’s pray they don’t.
The 2028 presidential race is still years away, but one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent progressives is already gaining surprising ground.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has moved ahead of Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the latest Polymarket odds for the 2028 presidential election, putting fresh attention on a potential White House campaign that could dramatically shape the Democratic Party’s future.
As of Friday, the prediction market placed Ocasio-Cortez at roughly 13% to win the presidency, narrowly ahead of Rubio. The numbers can change quickly as traders buy and sell contracts, and prediction markets should not be confused with traditional voter polls.
Still, the development is noteworthy.
Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the most recognizable figures on the American left, while Rubio remains one of the Republican Party’s most prominent national figures under President Donald Trump.
And the prediction market isn’t the only place where Ocasio-Cortez is showing early strength.
AOC Gains Ground as 2028 Speculation Builds
Ocasio-Cortez has not announced a campaign for president, but speculation about her political future has intensified.
Vice President JD Vance has even suggested that she could become the Democrat Republicans ultimately face in 2028.
During a June appearance on The Michael Knowles Show, Vance identified Ocasio-Cortez as a potential Democratic frontrunner.
“I think it’s got to be AOC,” Vance said.
For Republicans, an Ocasio-Cortez presidential campaign would create a dramatically different political contest.
The New York congresswoman has become closely associated with the Democratic Party’s progressive wing and has frequently battled Republicans over government spending, taxes, immigration, energy, healthcare and the role of the federal government.
Those disagreements could become central issues in a future presidential election.
Ocasio-Cortez Refuses to Rule Out Presidential Run
Ocasio-Cortez is doing little to completely shut down the speculation.
During a recent appearance on ABC’s This Week, she emphasized that her immediate priority remains the 2026 midterm elections.
“I’m focused on winning the midterms. I’m running for Congress right now,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
But when questioned directly about a potential presidential campaign, she left the door open.
“I haven’t ruled out the possibility,” she said.
That answer is almost certain to keep the 2028 speculation going.
Ocasio-Cortez has built a massive national following since arriving in Congress and could potentially compete for the progressive voters who previously rallied around Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Whether that support would translate into a successful nationwide presidential campaign remains a much bigger question.
New Hampshire Poll Gives AOC Another Boost
Ocasio-Cortez has also received encouraging news from an important presidential primary state.
A recent University of New Hampshire poll of likely Democratic primary voters found Ocasio-Cortez at 22% in a hypothetical 2028 contest.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg followed closely with 21%.
Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly received 9%, while former Vice President Kamala Harris stood at 5% in that particular survey.
The results provide only an extremely early snapshot of Democratic voters, but they demonstrate why Ocasio-Cortez is increasingly being discussed as a serious potential contender.
Democrats Could Face Major Fight Over Party’s Future
A crowded Democratic primary could eventually become a battle over what direction the party should take after the Trump era.
Possible candidates discussed for 2028 include Ocasio-Cortez, Harris, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Buttigieg, Kelly and other nationally known Democrats.
The ideological differences between those potential candidates could be substantial.
Ocasio-Cortez has established herself as a leading progressive voice, advocating a larger government role in areas including healthcare and economic policy.
That could give Republican candidates an opportunity to draw a sharp contrast over taxes, federal spending, regulation, energy production and the size of government.
It could also force Democratic primary voters to decide whether they want to continue moving toward the party’s progressive wing or choose a candidate viewed as more moderate.
Marco Rubio Remains a Major Republican Name
Rubio’s position in the prediction market doesn’t mean his presidential prospects have disappeared.
Far from it.
The secretary of state continues to be mentioned alongside Vice President Vance as a possible Republican standard-bearer after Trump.
Trump himself has added fuel to that speculation.
During a White House event in May, the president floated the possibility of Vance and Rubio eventually appearing together on a Republican presidential ticket, describing the combination as a potential “dream team.”
Trump was careful, however, not to endorse either man.
Trump made clear that his remarks should not be interpreted as an endorsement of either candidate.
He then suggested the two sounded like possible presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
The question would be which Republican gets the top job.
Is Trump Already Leaning Toward JD Vance?
Vance may currently have another advantage: his close relationship with Trump.
A Washington Post report alleged that Trump told donors, “at the end of the day, we need to elect JD.”
That immediately generated speculation that Trump had effectively selected his preferred political successor.
Trump later denied that he was making an endorsement.
“I think he’s great, but we’re way too early to even be thinking about that,” Trump said.
That caution makes sense.
The political landscape can change dramatically in two years, particularly with the 2026 midterm elections still ahead.
What AOC’s Rise Means for Conservative Voters
For conservative Americans, the possibility of an Ocasio-Cortez presidential campaign could make the 2028 election especially consequential.
Her rise would potentially place progressive economic and social policies at the center of the Democratic presidential primary.
Republicans would likely counter by emphasizing lower taxes, domestic energy production, immigration enforcement, reduced regulation and limits on federal spending.
Those differences could produce one of the clearest ideological contrasts voters have seen in years.
But there is an important reason not to get ahead of the numbers.
Prediction markets are not elections.
They measure what traders believe will happen, and their probabilities can change rapidly following political developments, polling results and candidate announcements.
Ocasio-Cortez moving ahead of Rubio therefore does not mean she would defeat him — or any other Republican — in an actual election.
It does show that traders increasingly consider her a serious possibility.
2026 Midterms Come First
Despite growing interest in 2028, both parties have a much more immediate political battle ahead.
The 2026 midterm elections will determine control of Congress and could significantly influence the final two years of Trump’s current term.
Those results could also reshape the presidential field.
Strong Republican victories could strengthen Vance, Rubio and other potential Trump successors. Democratic victories could elevate Ocasio-Cortez, Newsom or another Democrat heading into the presidential cycle.
That makes the coming midterms an important test for both parties.
The Bottom Line
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has moved narrowly ahead of Marco Rubio in current Polymarket odds for winning the 2028 presidential election, while recent New Hampshire polling provides another indication that she could be competitive in a future Democratic primary.
But Americans shouldn’t mistake early speculation for an election forecast.
Ocasio-Cortez has not announced a presidential campaign. Neither Rubio nor Vance has launched one either. And President Trump has stopped short of formally endorsing a successor.
What is becoming increasingly clear is that the battle over America’s political future may begin long before the first votes of 2028 are cast.
If Ocasio-Cortez eventually enters the race, Republicans could find themselves facing a Democratic nominee offering voters a dramatically different vision for taxes, spending, immigration, energy and the proper size of the federal government.
For now, however, the first major test comes in November 2026 — and what voters decide in the midterms could determine who enters 2028 with the strongest hand.
