Republican Rep. María Elvira Salazar of Florida is publicly challenging President Donald Trump over his immigration enforcement policies, warning that some Hispanic voters who supported him in the 2024 election now feel “betrayed.”
The South Florida lawmaker made the pointed remarks in a new campaign ad as immigration takes center stage in the final weeks before the 2026 midterm elections.
Salazar has previously supported Trump and endorsed his 2024 presidential campaign, making the public disagreement particularly notable.
Salazar Warns Trump About Immigration Enforcement
In the campaign ad, Salazar speaks directly to the president and argues that some federal immigration enforcement actions have gone too far.
Salazar told Trump that she believes some of his administration’s immigration enforcement measures have become too aggressive.
She points to immigration detention figures from July and argues that many of those detained did not have criminal records.
Salazar then issues a political warning to Trump.
She says many of the Hispanic voters who helped return Trump to the White House in 2024 now feel let down by his administration.
Florida Politics reported that Salazar made the remarks in a bilingual campaign advertisement filmed outside the White House.
Republican Congresswoman Calls for Different Approach
Salazar made clear that she is not calling for blanket amnesty for undocumented immigrants.
Instead, she urged Trump to pursue an immigration policy that maintains enforcement while providing greater stability for certain immigrants living in the United States.
She compared the potential significance of immigration reform to the legacies of Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan.
Salazar said she is not advocating for amnesty, but rather for allowing undocumented immigrants to live with dignity in the United States.
The distinction is important because Salazar has long attempted to position herself between two competing priorities in the immigration debate: stronger enforcement of U.S. immigration law and legal protections for some undocumented residents.
Salazar Has Made Immigration a Signature Issue
Immigration policy has been one of Salazar’s most prominent issues in Congress.
She is a lead sponsor of the Dignity Act, legislation that combines increased border enforcement and employment verification requirements with legal protections for qualifying undocumented immigrants.
The latest version would allow some eligible immigrants to receive renewable legal status if they meet requirements including work or education participation and financial restitution. It does not provide the direct pathway to citizenship contained in earlier versions of the proposal.
That background helps explain why Salazar is willing to challenge the Trump administration on immigration even while remaining a Republican ally on many other issues.
Hispanic Voters Could Play Major Role in Florida Race
Salazar represents Florida’s 27th Congressional District, which includes heavily Hispanic communities in the Miami area.
Florida Politics reported that roughly 73.5% of residents in the district are Hispanic, while more than half were born outside the United States.
That demographic makeup makes immigration policy especially significant in the congressional race.
Salazar is facing Democratic nominee Eliott Rodriguez, a former Miami television journalist, in the November 2026 general election.
Rodriguez has also focused heavily on immigration and has criticized Salazar’s handling of the issue.
Poll Shows Competitive Florida Congressional Race
The contest has attracted additional attention following the release of an internal poll conducted for Rodriguez’s campaign.
The Bendixen & Amandi International survey found Salazar and Rodriguez tied at 45% after undecided voters were pushed to choose a candidate.
Because the poll was commissioned by Rodriguez’s campaign, the results should be viewed in that context rather than treated as an independent measurement of the race.
The same campaign poll reported Trump with a negative approval rating inside the district. Again, those numbers came from a survey conducted for Salazar’s Democratic opponent.
Salazar Has Previously Backed Trump
Salazar’s criticism does not represent a complete break with Trump.
She endorsed him during the 2024 presidential campaign and has supported many Republican policies in Congress.
Trump also backed Salazar earlier in 2026.
Her latest message instead focuses specifically on immigration enforcement and the treatment of immigrants without criminal records.
That distinction could become increasingly important as Republicans debate how aggressively immigration laws should be enforced and whether longtime undocumented residents should have any opportunity to obtain legal status.
Immigration Debate Intensifies Ahead of Midterms
Immigration remains one of the most closely watched issues heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
Republicans have generally emphasized border security, deportations and enforcement of existing immigration laws, while Democrats have pushed for various combinations of enforcement and expanded legal protections.
Salazar’s position adds another element to that debate because her criticism is coming from inside the Republican Party.
She supports tougher border security but argues that immigration enforcement should distinguish between dangerous criminals and other immigrants.
Earlier this month, Salazar made a similar argument while calling for the review of an ICE detention involving a Nicaraguan journalist who had fled political persecution. She said immigration authorities should enforce the law while avoiding treating political exiles like criminals.
Trump Faces Rare Public Warning From GOP Ally
For Trump, Salazar’s advertisement represents an unusually direct warning from a Republican member of Congress who previously encouraged Hispanic voters to support him.
For Salazar, the decision puts immigration at the center of her own re-election campaign in one of the nation’s most heavily Hispanic congressional districts.
Whether her message changes the political debate remains uncertain, but the advertisement underscores an important disagreement within the Republican coalition over how the administration should carry out immigration enforcement.
As the November midterms approach, the dispute between Trump and Salazar is likely to keep attention focused on immigration, Hispanic voters and the future direction of Republican immigration policy.
