Video: Trump Official Shows Off Incredible Athleticism

Nobody expected to see this.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth turned heads Saturday after video showed him displaying an impressive three-point shot during a visit to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

Hegseth connected on nine of 10 attempts from beyond the three-point line in a video posted on X by senior adviser Tami Radabaugh, giving viewers an unexpected look at the defense secretary’s basketball skills.

The clip showed Hegseth shooting from near the top of the arc inside the Air Force Academy’s basketball arena.

He knocked down his first attempt before his second shot bounced off the rim.

“Ahhh,” Hegseth reacted after the miss.

It would be the only shot he failed to make.

Pete Hegseth Drains Eight Straight Three-Pointers

After missing his second attempt, Hegseth found his rhythm and made his next eight consecutive shots.

Several of the attempts dropped cleanly through the basket as those watching nearby reacted to the increasingly impressive streak.

Hegseth was dressed casually for the shooting session, wearing a white Air Force shirt, blue athletic shorts and low-top basketball shoes.

After making his final three-pointer, he immediately turned away from the basket, raised his right index finger and confidently walked down the court.

The celebration appeared similar to the famous style associated with basketball legend Larry Bird, whose memorable performances in NBA three-point contests became part of basketball history.

“I hope you got that on tape,” Hegseth joked after finishing the shooting display.

Fortunately for him, somebody did.

Video Shows Different Side of Defense Secretary

The lighthearted basketball moment came during Hegseth’s trip to Colorado Springs, where he was scheduled to address approximately 3,500 cadets and participate in the honorary coin toss ahead of the Air Force-Navy football game.

Most Americans are accustomed to seeing Hegseth discussing military readiness, national security and Defense Department policy.

The basketball clip offered something considerably different.

Instead of appearing behind a podium or speaking with military commanders, Hegseth was casually shooting baskets and demonstrating that he apparently has considerable experience from long range.

Making nine of 10 three-pointers is difficult even for experienced recreational basketball players, making the video especially notable.

Hegseth Performance Draws Comparison With Obama Basketball Moment

Political leaders have occasionally attracted attention for their athletic abilities — or lack thereof.

Former President Barack Obama, a longtime basketball fan, famously struggled during a shooting appearance at a White House Easter event in 2013.

ABC News reported at the time that Obama made only two of 22 shots during the basketball session.

Hegseth’s Saturday performance produced a much different result.

After missing only his second attempt, the defense secretary repeatedly connected from long range and ended the session with a confident walk-off celebration.

The two moments occurred under very different circumstances, but both demonstrate how an unscripted athletic appearance can quickly attract attention when prominent government officials step onto the court.

Hegseth Has Emphasized Physical Fitness

The basketball footage also comes as Hegseth continues emphasizing physical readiness inside the U.S. military.

Physical fitness has been one of the themes Hegseth has repeatedly discussed as defense secretary, arguing that service members and military leaders should be held to demanding standards.

During a recent State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, Hegseth spoke about military readiness, leadership standards and changes being implemented throughout the Defense Department.

His remarks generated extensive media coverage.

Hegseth has argued that America’s armed forces should remain focused on combat effectiveness, discipline and preparedness, while maintaining rigorous expectations for personnel.

Those discussions have occasionally produced controversy, particularly when Hegseth has used colorful language while talking about fitness requirements and military leadership.

Hegseth Also Takes Aim at Media Coverage

During the Quantico address, Hegseth also sharply criticized sections of the national media.

He accused some journalists of approaching coverage of President Donald Trump and the U.S. military through an excessively political lens.

“Our so-called press makes Iranian state media look reasonable,” Hegseth said during his remarks.

Hegseth argued that irresponsible reporting can have consequences beyond partisan politics, particularly when stories involve military operations and American troops.

His comments sparked debate over the relationship between the press, the Pentagon and the Trump administration.

Critics of Hegseth have defended aggressive reporting on government officials as an essential part of journalism, while supporters argue that national security reporting should take greater care when sensitive military issues are involved.

A Rare Lighthearted Moment From Washington

Political news is frequently dominated by elections, policy disputes, international conflicts and partisan battles.

Hegseth’s basketball performance provided a noticeably lighter moment.

There were no policy announcements, congressional disputes or lengthy speeches involved.

Instead, viewers saw the defense secretary step behind the three-point line and repeatedly knock down shots.

The final tally — nine makes on 10 attempts — would be impressive for almost anyone casually stepping onto a basketball court.

Hegseth’s reaction suggested he knew it, too.

After watching his final attempt fall through the basket, he turned around before the ball had much time to settle and walked away celebrating.

For a Cabinet official normally associated with serious national security issues, the viral clip offered Americans a rare glimpse of Hegseth away from the formal surroundings of Washington.

And if the video is any indication, the defense secretary may have a better jump shot than many people expected.
