Trump Discovers Terrible Talarico Secret

Does Texas really want this?

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is facing renewed scrutiny after a resurfaced 2020 video renewed questions about his past views on policing and criminal justice as he campaigns for one of the most closely watched Senate seats in the country.

The Texas state representative is locked in a high-stakes race against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton for a seat that could play a major role in determining which party controls the U.S. Senate. While Talarico has recently emphasized his support for law enforcement and border security, Republicans argue his earlier remarks tell a different story.

The controversy centers on comments Talarico made during a September 2020 virtual event hosted by South Asian American Voter Empowerment (SAAVETX), months after nationwide protests and riots followed the death of George Floyd.

Resurfaced Video Draws New Attention

In the resurfaced video, Talarico said the country had a “really exciting” opportunity to rethink public safety policies and make what he described as fundamental changes to the criminal justice system.

He argued that elected officials should listen to activists calling for sweeping reforms and said policymakers should work toward ending what he described as the long-standing “over-policing” of communities of color.

Talarico also claimed that police violence against Black Americans has historical roots in slavery, Jim Crow laws, and mass incarceration. He said the events of 2020 created an opportunity to pursue major reforms that would better reflect the nation’s highest ideals.

As part of that vision, Talarico suggested shifting greater attention and public resources toward community-based programs that address the underlying causes of crime rather than relying solely on traditional law enforcement approaches.

Calling the conversation “really exciting,” he praised local leaders who were pursuing similar policies.

Praise For Austin’s Police Budget Cuts

During the same event, Talarico specifically pointed to Austin after city leaders approved significant reductions to the Austin Police Department’s budget.

He criticized Republican Gov. Greg Abbott for opposing those decisions and argued that local governments should be free to determine their own public safety priorities without interference from the state.

At the time, Abbott strongly condemned Austin’s decision, warning that reducing police funding would put officers and residents at greater risk while encouraging lawlessness. The governor also pledged financial penalties for Texas cities that chose to defund their police departments, arguing that protecting public safety must remain the state’s top priority.

Talarico dismissed Abbott’s criticism, accusing the governor of undermining local governments and calling his objections hypocritical.

Republicans Seize On Past Remarks

The resurfaced footage has quickly become a major talking point for Republicans seeking to highlight Talarico’s record as voters begin paying closer attention to the Senate race.

Republican National Committee spokesperson Zach Kraft argued that Talarico’s comments reveal a political philosophy that would weaken law enforcement and make Texas communities less safe.

Kraft also criticized what he described as Talarico’s broader approach to policing, border security, and criminal justice, saying those policies would place families at greater risk.

The renewed debate comes as recent polling suggests the Senate contest remains highly competitive, raising the stakes for both parties in one of the nation’s premier battleground races.

Talarico Campaign Pushes Back

Talarico’s campaign has firmly rejected claims that he supports defunding the police.

Campaign spokesperson JT Ennis said Talarico opposes reducing police funding, has supported legislation denying bail to violent offenders, and has voted for billions of dollars in law enforcement funding during his time in the Texas Legislature.

Ennis also said the Democratic candidate supports a secure southern border and recently unveiled a border security plan backed by law enforcement officials from both political parties.

The campaign further argued that critics are mischaracterizing Talarico’s record by ignoring legislation he supported to expand mental health resources that would assist police officers in responding to crisis situations.

According to Ennis, those proposals were designed to strengthen public safety while helping prevent future tragedies and giving officers additional tools to respond to emergencies.

Paxton Campaign Doubles Down

Paxton’s campaign rejected those explanations, arguing that Talarico’s legislative history tells a different story.

Campaign spokesperson Madison Cercy said Talarico has consistently opposed key law enforcement priorities during his time in the Legislature. She also argued that donating to organizations that supported police funding cuts and opposing legislation restricting personal bond releases for individuals accused of violent crimes contradicts the campaign’s current messaging.

Cercy added that voting for broader state spending bills that include law enforcement funding does not, by itself, establish a pro-law enforcement record.

High-Stakes Race Heads Into Election Season

With the Texas Senate race expected to attract national attention, both campaigns are working to define Talarico’s record before voters head to the polls.

Republicans are expected to continue highlighting the resurfaced 2020 comments as evidence that Talarico once embraced policies they believe would weaken law enforcement. Democrats, meanwhile, maintain that his overall legislative record demonstrates support for public safety while pursuing reforms they say improve the criminal justice system.

As the campaign intensifies, issues such as law enforcement, border security, crime, and public safety are likely to remain central themes in one of the country’s most consequential Senate elections.
