New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani welcomed mayors and senior government officials from around the world Saturday as he opened a three-day international summit focused on housing, immigration and climate policy.
The 2026 Urban 20 Mayors Summit is being co-chaired by New York City and Los Angeles and runs from September 19 through September 21.
According to New York City officials, the gathering is expected to include 25 mayors along with deputy mayors and other senior officials representing 34 cities around the world.
The summit gives Mamdani a prominent international platform to promote his administration’s priorities while building relationships with political leaders from other major cities.
Mamdani Brings Global Leaders to New York
The Urban 20, commonly known as U20, was created to give major cities a greater voice in discussions involving the Group of 20 nations.
This year, participating officials are concentrating on three major areas: affordable housing and homelessness, climate action and resilience, and immigration and human mobility.
New York City and Los Angeles are serving as co-chairs of the 2026 gathering.
During his opening remarks, Mamdani said cities around the world are confronting many of the same economic pressures.
He pointed to rising rents, energy costs and extreme weather as challenges affecting working families.
“Working families across the globe are being squeezed by rents that rise faster than paychecks,” Mamdani said, according to the mayor’s office.
He argued that cooperation between cities could help governments find solutions to problems that extend beyond individual borders.
Immigration Takes Center Stage
Immigration is also expected to play a major role during the summit.
Mamdani has made protecting immigrant communities a central part of his administration’s political agenda.
The official U20 program lists “Protecting Immigrant Communities and Human Mobility” as one of the three primary policy areas for the 2026 summit.
Mamdani also used his remarks to criticize political opposition to some immigration policies, reflecting the sharp national divide over immigration enforcement and the responsibilities of state and local governments.
The debate comes as immigration continues to be one of the most closely watched political issues in the United States.
Questions Raised About Media Access
The summit has also drawn attention over the amount of access provided to journalists.
The New York Post reported that much of Saturday’s activity was closed to the press and that only selected news organizations were permitted to attend Mamdani’s opening remarks.
Some meeting locations were also not publicly disclosed, according to the newspaper.
The mayor’s public schedule included a visit to a wastewater treatment facility with Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov, Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni and Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.
Mamdani was also scheduled to hold private meetings with Collboni and Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema.
The limited access could become an issue for critics seeking greater transparency from city officials when elected leaders participate in international policy discussions.
Housing and Climate Policy on the Agenda
Housing affordability is another major focus of the summit.
New York and many other large cities have struggled with rising rents, housing shortages and homelessness.
Participating officials are expected to discuss strategies involving affordable housing construction, tenant protections and efforts to reduce housing costs.
Climate policy is also featured prominently.
Officials plan to discuss extreme heat, flooding, energy costs and other environmental issues affecting large metropolitan areas.
The summit coincides with Climate Week NYC, which begins September 20.
Leaders From Around the World Attend
The gathering includes government officials from cities across the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
American cities represented at the summit include Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Miami, Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle, according to the mayor’s office.
International officials are also traveling to New York for the event.
The New York Post reported that Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung and Mexico City Head of Government Clara Brugada are among those attending.
Los Angeles Deputy Mayor for International Affairs Dilpreet Sidhu is participating on behalf of Los Angeles.
Summit Could Influence Future Policy
The Urban 20 is designed to give city governments a way to influence discussions held by national leaders through the broader G20 process.
Participating cities are expected to exchange policy ideas and develop recommendations that can eventually be presented to national governments.
The three-day gathering will conclude Sunday with participating officials expected to approve a joint communiqué outlining their shared priorities.
Representatives of national governments, the United Nations and other international organizations will then be invited to respond.
For Mamdani, the summit provides another opportunity to raise New York City’s profile on the international stage while advancing policies his administration has emphasized at home.
For New Yorkers, however, the more important question may be whether ideas discussed behind conference-room doors eventually translate into policies affecting housing costs, immigration, energy expenses and city spending.
Those issues directly affect millions of residents — and they are likely to receive far more attention once the summit ends and the policy proposals begin moving from international discussions into local government.
