Republicans Betray Trump In Stunning Midterm Twist

This can’t keep happened.

The Republican Party is facing an unusual midterm development as several prominent GOP figures break ranks and publicly support Democratic candidates ahead of the November elections.

With control of Congress at stake, these crossover endorsements are drawing attention in several closely watched races. The Republicans involved represent only a small portion of the party, but their decisions could become politically significant in contests where even a modest number of independent or crossover voters may matter.

The defections include former governors, Republican elected officials, local leaders and former GOP candidates.

At the same time, the movement is not entirely one-sided. Outgoing Democratic Rep. Jared Golden of Maine has endorsed Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York in his reelection campaign.

Still, some of the most notable cross-party endorsements this year involve Republicans backing Democrats.

Former Republican Governor Backs Democrat in Kansas

Former Kansas Gov. Bill Graves has endorsed Democrat Adam Hamilton in his effort to defeat Republican Sen. Roger Marshall.

Graves served as Kansas governor from 1995 to 2003 and remains a prominent name in the state’s political history.

In announcing his endorsement, Graves criticized Marshall’s record and praised Hamilton’s character and commitment to public service.

Hamilton is a longtime Methodist pastor who is attempting to attract voters beyond the traditional Democratic base.

Graves has crossed party lines before. He previously supported Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly in her campaigns against Republican opponents.

That history makes the endorsement less surprising than it might initially appear, but it still gives Democrats a recognizable Republican voice in a Senate contest they hope to make competitive.

Georgia Republican Endorses Jon Ossoff

Another Republican endorsement has emerged in Georgia, where Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff is running for reelection against Republican Rep. Mike Collins.

Donald Chase, the Republican chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commission, has endorsed Ossoff.

Chase said his political decisions are not based entirely on party affiliation and indicated that he supports candidates he believes have earned his confidence.

Other Georgia Conservatives have also backed Ossoff, including Republican mayors Julie Smith of Tifton and Scott James Matheson of Valdosta.

Their endorsements are particularly noteworthy because Georgia remains one of the nation’s most closely watched political battlegrounds.

For Ossoff, support from Republican officials offers a way to appeal to voters who may normally favor GOP candidates but are willing to split their tickets.

Jeff Flake Again Breaks With the GOP

Former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake has also endorsed Ossoff.

Flake has been one of President Donald Trump’s most persistent Republican critics and has repeatedly supported Democrats in high-profile national elections.

He criticized Trump’s response to the 2020 election and later endorsed Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential campaign.

His endorsement of Ossoff therefore continues an established pattern of opposition to Trump rather than representing a sudden shift in Flake’s politics.

Even so, Democrats are likely to highlight his support as they try to attract Republicans and independents uncomfortable with the direction of the party.

South Dakota Republican Supports Democratic Successor

An especially unusual crossover endorsement has surfaced in South Dakota.

Republican Secretary of State Monae Johnson has endorsed Democrat Terrence Davis in the race to replace her after she lost the GOP nomination earlier this year.

Johnson urged voters to evaluate the candidates based on their qualifications rather than automatically voting according to party affiliation.

She specifically highlighted Davis’ emphasis on transparency, voting rights and improving government operations.

The endorsement stands out because South Dakota has been one of America’s strongest Republican states in recent elections.

It also involves an office directly responsible for important government functions, including election administration.

Former GOP Challenger Turns Against Roger Marshall

Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall is also facing opposition from within Republican ranks.

Arch Naramore, who challenged Marshall in the Republican primary, has announced his support for Democrat Adam Hamilton.

Naramore says he still considers himself a Republican but has criticized Marshall over several issues, including tariffs and questions surrounding his ties to Kansas.

In endorsing Hamilton, Naramore emphasized the Democrat’s long history in the state and decades of work as a pastor.

His decision gives Hamilton another Republican supporter to feature as Democrats attempt to make the Kansas Senate race more competitive.

Are Republicans Abandoning Trump?

The short answer is that the endorsements do not by themselves demonstrate a widespread Republican revolt.

Cross-party endorsements happen in nearly every election cycle, and several of the Republicans involved have previously criticized Trump or supported Democratic candidates.

But the endorsements are still politically relevant.

They show that some Republican officials and former candidates are willing to place their opposition to individual GOP nominees—or to Trump’s leadership—above party unity.

That could matter most in closely divided races where candidates are competing for independents, moderate Republicans and voters who regularly split their tickets.

Democrats See an Opportunity

Democrats are likely to use Republican endorsements as evidence that their candidates can appeal beyond the Democratic base.

That strategy is especially important in states such as Georgia and Kansas, where winning over even a relatively small percentage of Republican-leaning voters could influence a competitive race.

Republicans, meanwhile, can argue that a handful of crossover endorsements do not necessarily reflect the broader GOP electorate.

Both points can be true.

High-profile endorsements attract headlines, but Election Day ultimately depends on how millions of ordinary voters cast their ballots.

The Midterm Stakes Are Growing

The larger story is the battle for control of Congress.

Republicans and Democrats are fighting over narrow margins in both chambers, meaning competitive Senate and House races are receiving enormous attention and campaign spending.

Voters are also weighing issues including inflation, household costs, immigration, government spending, taxes, energy policy and foreign affairs.

For older Americans in particular, pocketbook concerns involving retirement savings, Social Security, Medicare, housing expenses and everyday prices could play an important role in determining which party they support.

That puts additional pressure on candidates to hold their traditional supporters while also appealing to independents.

What Happens Next

The Republican officials endorsing Democrats remain a relatively small group, and there is no guarantee their endorsements will persuade large numbers of voters.

But they add another unpredictable element to an already consequential midterm election.

For President Trump and Republican leaders, the challenge will be keeping GOP voters united while defending competitive congressional seats.

For Democrats, the opportunity is to persuade enough independents and dissatisfied Republicans to cross party lines.

Whether these Republican defections represent isolated acts of political independence or something larger will become clearer when voters head to the polls in November.

For now, one thing is certain: party loyalty is being tested in several races that could help determine who controls Washington.
