Former President Barack Obama suggested during a new podcast interview that President Donald Trump continues to focus heavily on him years after both men served in the White House, adding another chapter to one of the most closely watched political rivalries in modern American history.
Obama made the comments Wednesday while appearing on the popular “All the Smoke” podcast with former NBA player Matt Barnes.
During the conversation, Barnes observed that Trump frequently references Obama and his family during speeches, interviews, and public appearances. He asked the former president whether he ever feels tempted to respond more aggressively to Trump’s criticism.
Obama responded with humor before offering his own explanation.
“I obviously have a room in his head—a suite in his head,” Obama joked, suggesting Trump remains preoccupied with him.
Obama Reflects On His Time In Office
Obama said that while serving as president, he rarely spent time thinking about previous administrations because he believed the responsibilities of the presidency demanded his full attention.
According to Obama, his focus was on governing rather than comparing himself to those who previously held the office.
“The people who came before me were gone,” he explained. “I had work to do.”
Obama added that constantly measuring oneself against political predecessors seems unusual to him and argued that elected leaders should remain focused on serving the American people rather than engaging in personal rivalries.
Obama Says Trump’s Public And Private Tone Is Different
The former president also claimed there is a noticeable difference between Trump’s public comments and their private interactions.
Obama said the two have spoken face-to-face on several occasions and suggested those conversations are generally more restrained than Trump’s public rhetoric.
He attributed much of today’s heated political discourse to social media and digital communication, arguing that people often say things online that they would be unlikely to say during an in-person conversation.
Obama said direct dialogue encourages greater accountability and often leads to more productive discussions than exchanges made through phones or social media platforms.
