The GOP wants American voters to remember this on election day.
Independent Nebraska Senate hopeful Dan Osborn is drawing criticism after leaked audio surfaced in which he spoke disparagingly about some of President Donald Trump’s supporters.
The recording has become a major controversy in Nebraska’s 2026 U.S. Senate race, where Osborn is challenging Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts.
In the audio, Osborn used a hypothetical couple from Red Cloud, Nebraska, while discussing why Trump has been successful with certain voters.
Osborn suggested that some Trump supporters displaying the president’s flag may be motivated in part by a desire to feel aligned with a “winning team.”
He then suggested that such voters may be dealing with difficult lives, using profanity that has since been widely circulated online.
The recording immediately drew criticism and placed Osborn on the defensive as Election Day approaches.
Dan Osborn Responds to Leaked Trump Comments
CNN confronted Osborn about the recording during a September 16 interview.
Asked whether the voice on the tape was his, Osborn responded that it “sure sounds like me.”
But Osborn denied that the comments reflected his overall view of Trump supporters.
Osborn told CNN that his conversations with many Trump supporters have given him a different impression.
Osborn said he was attempting to describe the frustration felt by Americans who believe the traditional political system has failed them.
He argued that Trump successfully connected with voters who were angry with Washington by presenting himself as a political outsider.
Osborn said that Trump’s outsider appeal is a major reason many voters continue to support him.
Osborn also pointed to economic pressures facing Nebraska families and agricultural communities while explaining what he meant by saying some voters’ lives were difficult.
During another CNN segment, he cited rising financial pressures on Nebraska farms and ranches as part of his explanation.
Pete Ricketts Seizes on Osborn Recording
Ricketts and his Republican allies quickly used the recording to criticize Osborn.
Ricketts argued that the comments showed disrespect toward ordinary Nebraska residents, particularly working-class and rural voters.
The Republican senator specifically defended residents of communities such as Red Cloud and accused his opponent of looking down on the people he hopes to represent.
Osborn, meanwhile, has maintained that the remarks were out of character and has apologized to people who were offended.
The disagreement over what the recording reveals about Osborn is now becoming another dividing line in an already contentious Senate campaign.
Osborn Is Running as an Independent
Osborn is officially running as an independent rather than as the Democratic nominee.
However, the Nebraska Democratic Party is openly supporting his candidacy.
The party currently lists Osborn as an independent Senate candidate among the candidates it is supporting in the November 3 general election.
Nebraska Democratic officials also voted in August not to replace their withdrawn Senate nominee, leaving Osborn as the major candidate challenging Ricketts from outside the Republican Party.
Party leaders said at the time that they intended to support a coalition involving Democrats and independent voters.
That arrangement has become an important issue in the campaign.
Republicans frequently portray Osborn as closely aligned with Democrats, while Osborn argues that remaining independent allows him to challenge both major political parties.
Osborn Pushes Back on Democratic Label
Osborn has repeatedly rejected attempts to characterize him as a Democrat.
Earlier in September, he told CNN that he was not campaigning against Trump.
“I’m not running against Donald Trump. I’m running against Pete Ricketts,” Osborn said.
Asked about Republican accusations that he is effectively a Democrat, Osborn argued that his opponents are applying the label because he is challenging a Republican senator.
At the same time, Nebraska Democratic leaders have made no secret of their support for him.
The party said in September that Democrats and independents were “uniting behind Dan Osborn,” while still identifying him as an independent candidate.
Nebraska Senate Race Draws National Attention
Osborn is no stranger to a competitive statewide race.
He previously challenged Republican Sen. Deb Fischer as an independent in 2024.
According to CNN, Osborn finished about seven percentage points behind Fischer even though Trump carried Nebraska by more than 20 points in the presidential contest.
That result helped establish Osborn as a significant political figure in Nebraska and set the stage for his 2026 challenge against Ricketts.
His background is also central to his campaign message.
Osborn is an industrial mechanic, former union leader and Navy veteran who has sought to portray himself as a working-class political outsider.
Republicans, however, argue that Democratic support for his campaign raises questions about how politically independent he really is.
Leaked Comments Become Latest Campaign Flashpoint
The controversy ultimately centers on two competing interpretations of Osborn’s remarks.
Osborn says he was describing the economic hardship and political frustration that helped Trump connect with voters who felt ignored by Washington.
His critics argue that the wording of the leaked comments showed contempt for the very voters Osborn is attempting to win over.
CNN’s transcript confirms that Osborn rejected the idea that the remarks represented his general opinion of Trump voters and instead described Trump’s outsider appeal as one reason the president remains popular with many Nebraskans.
With the November 3 election drawing closer, the recording gives both campaigns another issue to emphasize as Nebraska voters decide between Osborn and Ricketts.
