President Donald Trump is making headlines once again after predicting that Greenland could come under U.S. control before the end of his current term in 2029. The remarks have reignited debate over America’s long-term national security strategy in the Arctic while prompting swift reactions from leaders in Greenland, Denmark, and even some members of Congress.
Speaking during a Friday interview with Real America’s Voice host Steve Gruber, Trump expressed confidence when the topic turned to Greenland’s future.
“I made a prediction on this program that before you left office, Greenland would be under our operational control,” Gruber said. “It’s still incredibly important in defending the Western Hemisphere.”
Trump responded by encouraging the prediction.
“You should make that bet,” the president said. “Greenland is important from our standpoint.”
The comments quickly fueled new discussion about the island’s growing strategic importance as global competition intensifies across the Arctic.
Why Trump Wants Greenland
President Trump first raised the possibility of the United States acquiring Greenland during his first term, arguing that the island’s strategic location and abundant natural resources made it increasingly valuable to America’s future.

Administration officials have repeatedly argued that Greenland occupies one of the world’s most important strategic positions, sitting between North America and Europe. The United States already maintains a significant military presence through Pituffik Space Base, which supports missile-warning systems, space surveillance, and other critical defense operations.
Greenland is also home to massive deposits of rare-earth elements and other critical minerals used in advanced electronics, military equipment, electric vehicles, and domestic manufacturing. Those resources have become increasingly important as the United States seeks to reduce dependence on foreign supply chains dominated by China.
Supporters of Trump’s position argue that strengthening America’s influence in Greenland would improve national security while helping counter expanding Russian and Chinese ambitions throughout the Arctic.
Trump’s Prediction Sparks Immediate Reaction
Trump’s latest prediction immediately drew criticism from Greenlandic officials, who continue to insist that the island’s future belongs solely to its people.
Greenland resident Orla Joelsen responded on social media shortly after Trump’s comments.
“It’s not gonna happen. Period,” Joelsen wrote.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has repeatedly rejected any suggestion that the territory could become part of the United States.
“Greenland does not want to be owned by the United States,” Nielsen previously said. “Greenland does not want to be governed from the United States.”
The prime minister has consistently maintained that Greenland is not for sale and that any decisions about the island’s future must be made by its own citizens.
Denmark Stands Firm
Denmark has also continued pushing back against Trump’s proposal.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has repeatedly stated that Greenland’s future cannot be decided by outside governments.
“It is a well-known position of the United States that it wants to own and take over Greenland,” Frederiksen said earlier this year. “I hope that it is equally well known everywhere that this is not going to happen.”
Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, managing most domestic affairs while Denmark oversees defense and foreign policy.
Officials from both governments have consistently rejected any discussion involving the purchase or annexation of the island.
Some Republicans Voice Concerns
Although many Republicans agree that Greenland has become increasingly important from a national security standpoint, Trump’s comments have also generated criticism from some members of his own party.
Former Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon has been among the most outspoken Republican critics.
Following Trump’s renewed comments about Greenland earlier this year, Bacon argued that aggressive rhetoric could damage America’s relationships with longtime NATO allies.

Other Republican leaders, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, have likewise emphasized maintaining strong partnerships with Denmark while recognizing Greenland’s growing strategic importance.
Why The Arctic Is Becoming More Important
Despite political disagreements over Trump’s proposal, defense experts broadly agree that the Arctic is becoming one of the world’s most important strategic regions.
Russia has dramatically expanded its military infrastructure across the Arctic in recent years, reopening military bases, increasing patrols, and strengthening its northern defenses.
China has also increased its investments throughout the region while describing itself as a “near-Arctic state” with growing interests in shipping routes, natural resources, and future commercial opportunities.
As melting sea ice creates new shipping lanes and access to previously unreachable mineral deposits, competition among major world powers is expected to continue increasing.
For the United States, Greenland provides a unique geographic advantage that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere.
