Trump Gets Last Laugh On Mamdani

Here’s what happened.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani reportedly was not given a speaking role during the funeral of a fallen U.S. Army soldier after the soldier’s family chose to keep the ceremony focused on honoring her life and military service.

According to a report from the New York Post, Mamdani attended Friday’s funeral for Army Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad in Queens and had prepared remarks ready. However, sources familiar with the service said the mayor ultimately was not invited to address those in attendance.

The development quickly drew attention as debate continues over Mamdani’s relationship with many conservative New Yorkers.

Family Reportedly Wanted Politics Kept Out

Sgt. Rampersad, 28, was one of three American soldiers killed during an Iranian missile strike in Jordan last month while serving overseas.

According to sources cited by the Post, her family wanted the funeral to remain centered on her sacrifice rather than political figures.

One source said the family holds conservative views and supports President Donald Trump, adding that they wanted to avoid unnecessary political attention during the memorial service.

“The family is more conservative and wanted to limit any political distractions,” the source reportedly said.

Witnesses Describe Mayor’s Reaction

People attending the funeral claimed Mamdani appeared surprised when his name wasn’t announced.

One witness said the mayor looked toward members of his staff before putting away the tablet that reportedly contained his prepared remarks.

According to the witness, Mamdani glanced toward his staff and appeared visibly frustrated when he realized he would not be speaking. After it became clear his name would not be called, he looked back at his aides before quietly putting away the tablet he had brought with him.

Neither the mayor’s office nor the Rampersad family has publicly commented on those claims.

Mamdani Releases His Prepared Statement

Although he did not speak during the ceremony, Mamdani’s office later released the remarks he had intended to deliver.

The statement honored Sgt. Rampersad’s military service and recognized the future she gave up while serving her country.

In the prepared remarks, Mamdani said that Americans often remember fallen service members for sacrificing the futures they could have enjoyed so others could live in safety. He added that Sgt. Rampersad gave up the many years and milestones that still lay ahead of her so future generations could have the opportunity to enjoy theirs.

The funeral service in Ozone Park also included remarks from several elected officials and community leaders, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul, State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and Ozone Park Residents Block Association President Sam Esposito.

New Controversy Ahead of 9/11 Ceremony

The reported funeral snub comes as Mamdani continues to face criticism from some families of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Several relatives of those killed on 9/11 have publicly urged the mayor not to attend this year’s ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Mamdani has rejected those calls and has indicated he still plans to attend the annual remembrance event.

Political Debate Continues

The funeral has become the latest flashpoint in the ongoing political debate surrounding the New York City mayor. Supporters of the Rampersad family argue they had every right to determine who would speak during a private memorial honoring a soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As the discussion continues, many Americans remain focused on remembering Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad’s service, sacrifice, and dedication to her country.
