President Donald Trump has unveiled an unusual new plan that could reshape how the United States prepares Americans for the next era of space exploration and national defense.
Trump signed an executive order Friday beginning the process of establishing the United States Space Academy, a new federal institution envisioned as a training ground for future leaders in NASA, the U.S. Space Force and America’s rapidly expanding space industry.
The concept has similarities to famous American service academies such as West Point and the U.S. Air Force Academy — but this school would have its sights set much farther away.
The Moon, Mars and America’s future in space would all be part of the larger mission.
And one major detail has yet to be decided.
Where will the new Space Academy be built?
Trump Announces U.S. Space Academy
Trump revealed the plan during an appearance at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where he also honored the astronauts who recently completed the historic Artemis II mission.
The president said a permanent location for the academy has not been selected, although he indicated that a decision could be coming.
The executive order establishes a presidential commission that will help develop the academy and make recommendations on its structure.
Those recommendations are expected to address major questions including the school’s curriculum, admissions requirements, governance, graduate service commitments and permanent location.
That means Americans should not expect a new campus to appear overnight.
The administration is beginning what could become a lengthy process of turning the idea into a functioning federal academy.
A West Point for America’s Space Program?
Trump compared the concept to some of America’s most famous military institutions.
West Point has educated Army officers for generations, while the Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Coast Guard Academy have their own long traditions of preparing future leaders.
Now Trump wants an institution focused specifically on America’s growing needs in space.
“We’re going to have an academy for what the people in this room love the most,” Trump said at Johnson Space Center.
According to the administration, the proposed academy would combine technical education, leadership development, discipline and public service.
Graduates could ultimately pursue careers supporting NASA, military space operations and other parts of America’s space enterprise.
For an administration that views space as increasingly important to both national security and economic growth, the academy could become an important piece of Trump’s long-term strategy.
Space Force Could Play Major Role
Trump’s latest announcement also builds upon one of the signature accomplishments of his first term: creation of the United States Space Force.
Established in 2019, the Space Force became the first new branch of the U.S. Armed Forces since the creation of the Air Force in 1947.
Space has since become increasingly important to American military operations.
Satellites support communications, intelligence gathering, missile detection, navigation and countless other systems that modern military forces depend upon.
The proposed academy could help develop a new generation of Americans specifically trained for that environment.
But its mission would extend beyond the military.
NASA and America’s commercial space industry are also expected to benefit from the talent pipeline the academy is intended to create.
Why Trump Says America Needs It
The announcement comes as competition in space intensifies.
The United States is pursuing an ambitious return to the Moon while also looking toward eventual human missions to Mars.
At the same time, space has become an increasingly important economic and national security arena.
Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States cannot afford to surrender its leadership in this new frontier.
The White House says the country needs more highly trained engineers, scientists and space professionals if America is going to maintain its advantage.
For older Americans who remember the original Space Race and Apollo moon landings, the renewed competition may sound familiar.

The president awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the four members of the Artemis II crew.
They are NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
The crew traveled around the Moon earlier this year aboard NASA’s Orion spacecraft before returning safely to Earth.
Their journey marked the first crewed lunar mission in more than half a century.
Trump praised the astronauts as space pioneers while also recognizing the engineers, scientists and other professionals who helped make their mission possible.
The Congressional Space Medal of Honor is a rare distinction reserved for extraordinary contributions to America’s space program.
Artemis II Set a Remarkable Record
Artemis II launched April 1 and spent more than nine days in space before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on April 10.
The astronauts did not land on the Moon.
Instead, the mission tested critical equipment and procedures that NASA needs before attempting future crewed lunar landings.
During their journey, the astronauts traveled farther from Earth than any humans before them.

Trump used his Houston appearance to discuss another ambitious project: a nuclear-powered spacecraft intended for future interplanetary travel.
The president said nuclear propulsion could help solve one of the biggest problems facing deep-space missions — traveling enormous distances efficiently.
“They have to go nuclear because they have essentially unlimited fuel,” Trump said.
Trump went even further, describing a future in which America develops what he called a massive “Star fleet.”
His vision involves spacecraft making long-distance space travel increasingly routine while simultaneously strengthening U.S. military capabilities.
It is an extraordinary goal.
Whether the technology develops as quickly as Trump hopes remains to be seen.
But nuclear propulsion has long been viewed as one potential technology for reducing travel times and expanding what astronauts can accomplish on missions far beyond Earth.
A New Space Race Is Taking Shape
There is another reason Washington is placing so much attention on the Moon.
China is pursuing its own ambitious lunar program.
Beijing has been working toward putting Chinese astronauts on the Moon around the end of the decade.
Both countries have shown interest in establishing a long-term presence near the lunar South Pole.
That raises questions extending far beyond scientific exploration.
The nation that establishes a durable presence on the Moon could gain important technological, economic and strategic advantages in the decades ahead.
Trump’s message is that America intends to be that nation.
Trump Blames Previous Administrations
The president also criticized previous administrations for what he described as years of decline in America’s space capabilities.
Trump specifically targeted the Obama administration while discussing the period when the United States could no longer launch astronauts into orbit from American soil.
After NASA retired the Space Shuttle in 2011, U.S. astronauts depended on Russian Soyuz spacecraft for transportation to the International Space Station.
Crewed orbital launches from American soil finally resumed in 2020.
Trump has frequently pointed to that comeback as evidence that the United States can restore its leadership when Washington makes space exploration a national priority.
His supporters are likely to see the new Space Academy through the same lens: an investment in American technological leadership, national defense and competition with foreign rivals.

The presidential commission must now work through questions involving curriculum, admissions, governance, graduate obligations, partnerships, location and implementation.
Congress could also become an important part of the process as lawmakers consider funding and any legislation needed to turn the proposal into reality.
That means plenty could change before the first students ever walk onto a Space Academy campus.
But the larger direction of Trump’s policy is already clear.
The administration sees space not simply as a destination for scientists and astronauts, but as a critical arena for American national security, economic growth, technological leadership and competition with China.
The United States once raced the Soviet Union to the Moon.
