Secretary of State Marco Rubio is making headlines after scoring a decisive victory over Vice President JD Vance in an unofficial survey conducted during one of the nation’s largest conservative gatherings, adding new fuel to early conversations about the Republican Party’s future beyond President Donald Trump’s current administration.
Although the 2028 presidential election remains years away, Rubio’s commanding performance has many political observers taking notice as conservatives begin discussing who could eventually carry the GOP banner when the next open White House race arrives.
Rubio received support from an impressive 85% of attendees at the Western Conservative Summit, while Vice President JD Vance finished second with 49% support, giving Rubio a commanding 36-point advantage in the annual survey.
Unlike a traditional election poll, participants were allowed to approve as many candidates as they supported instead of selecting just one favorite. As a result, the survey measured each candidate’s overall popularity among attendees rather than serving as a direct head-to-head matchup.
Rubio Emerges As An Early Favorite
The results suggest Rubio currently enjoys broad support among many conservative activists who attended the conference.
Since becoming Secretary of State under President Donald Trump, Rubio has remained one of the administration’s most visible cabinet members, frequently representing the United States on foreign policy matters while defending the administration’s America First agenda.
His strong showing at the summit reflects growing enthusiasm among grassroots conservatives who view him as one of the Republican Party’s most recognizable national leaders.
While Vice President JD Vance also posted a strong result by finishing second, Rubio’s overwhelming lead became one of the biggest stories to emerge from the event.

Rubio and Vance were not the only Republicans earning favorable marks from attendees.

More Than 500 Conservatives Took Part
According to organizers, more than 500 conservatives attended this year’s Western Conservative Summit, held under the theme:
“A New Birth of Freedom: Reigniting the American Dream.”
The annual conference brings together conservative activists, elected officials, policy experts, media personalities, and grassroots organizations to discuss the future of the Republican Party and the nation’s political direction.
The survey itself was organized by the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University, which presented attendees with a list of 27 prospective Republican and Democratic presidential contenders.
Rather than forcing participants to choose a single candidate, organizers allowed them to approve every individual they would consider supporting for president.
What The Poll Really Means
Because attendees could select multiple candidates, the survey should not be viewed as a prediction of the Republican presidential primary.
Instead, it serves as a snapshot of which political figures currently enjoy the broadest support among conservatives attending the conference.
Organizers have repeatedly emphasized that the Western Conservative Summit’s annual straw poll is informal and non-scientific, meaning it is not designed to represent Republican voters nationwide.
Still, these surveys often generate significant attention because they provide an early look at which leaders are resonating with highly engaged conservative activists.
Early 2028 Conversations Are Already Beginning
President Donald Trump remains focused on leading the country, and no major Republican has officially announced plans to seek the presidency in 2028.
Even so, political discussions about the future of the Republican Party have already begun as conservative voters evaluate the next generation of GOP leadership.
Rubio’s overwhelming victory over Vice President JD Vance is likely to keep his name at the center of those conversations for months to come. Whether that support eventually translates into a presidential campaign remains unknown, but the latest survey clearly shows he enjoys substantial goodwill among many conservatives attending one of the movement’s premier annual events.
