Trump appointed Mark Paoletta as chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission, the federal agency responsible for reviewing major development projects throughout the nation’s capital.
Although the agency rarely generates the attention received by departments such as Justice, State or Defense, its responsibilities include some of Washington’s most significant federal properties, monuments and development proposals.
Paoletta’s appointment comes as the Trump administration pursues an ambitious effort to reshape parts of Washington and place a greater emphasis on America’s history, architecture and national identity.
Trump Selects a Familiar Conservative Figure
Paoletta is already a prominent figure inside the administration.
He serves as general counsel for the White House Office of Management and Budget, where he works alongside OMB Director Russ Vought.
Paoletta previously held the OMB general counsel position during Trump’s first administration and returned after Trump came back to the White House.
His latest appointment replaces Will Scharf, who is moving into a new position as White House counsel.
Paoletta welcomed Trump’s decision.

Paoletta and Thomas subsequently remained friends.
