Trump Demands Democrat Be Thrown Off Midterms Ballot

Trump is not happy.

President Donald Trump is calling for a Democratic Senate candidate to be removed from the November midterm ballot after a bombshell investigation uncovered an alleged political scheme involving two candidates with nearly identical names.

The controversy erupted in Alaska, where Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan is fighting to retain his seat against former Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola.

With control of the U.S. Senate potentially at stake, the allegations have raised serious questions about campaign tactics, election integrity, and whether voters could be confused by candidates sharing the same name.

Trump responded by demanding that Peltola and another candidate named Dan Sullivan be removed from the ballot.

Trump Demands Action After Explosive Election Report

The dispute intensified Wednesday after The New York Times published an investigation into efforts by Democratic operatives to recruit additional candidates for Alaska’s Senate election.

According to the report, individuals associated with Peltola’s campaign and national Democratic organizations participated in an effort to recruit candidates who could draw support away from Republican Sen. Sullivan.

One of those candidates was Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., a retired teacher from Petersburg, Alaska, who shares the same first and last name as the incumbent senator.

The investigation detailed how a campaign staffer was reportedly instructed in 2025 to search voter records for Alaska residents named Dan Sullivan.

The apparent objective was to identify someone whose name could potentially confuse voters and affect the outcome of a close election.

Trump quickly condemned the reported activity.

In a statement posted to Truth Social, the president accused Democrats of attempting to manipulate the election and argued that those involved should face consequences.

He described the alleged scheme as “A FRAUD ON THE AMERICAN PUBLIC” and demanded that both Peltola and the second Sullivan be excluded from the ballot.

The president also accused Democrats of making false statements in federal court.

However, those allegations have not resulted in a judicial finding that Peltola or her campaign committed election fraud or perjury.

How Two Candidates Named Dan Sullivan Ended Up on the Ballot

The unusual situation began when Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. entered the Senate race against the sitting Republican senator.

Both candidates appear on Alaska’s November 3 ballot, alongside Peltola and another contender.

The incumbent, Dan S. Sullivan, is seeking another term in Washington.

The challenger, Dan J. Sullivan, is a retired educator who has maintained that his candidacy is legitimate.

The New York Times investigation reported that Democratic-linked operatives worked behind the scenes to recruit candidates who might weaken the Republican incumbent’s support.

According to Alaska Public Media, the effort also involved recruiting another candidate who could influence the election’s outcome.

Such strategies are sometimes used in competitive political races, particularly when relatively small shifts in voter support could determine the winner.

But the reported recruitment of someone with nearly the same name as a major candidate has made this case especially controversial.

Democrats Deny Involvement in Ballot Controversy

Despite the investigation’s findings, Peltola’s campaign has denied involvement with either Sullivan campaign.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has also rejected allegations that it helped recruit the additional Sullivan.

The retired teacher has similarly denied coordinating his candidacy with Peltola’s campaign.

However, The New York Times reported obtaining communications and accounts from individuals familiar with the recruitment effort.

Former Peltola campaign manager Elisa Rios was among those who provided information about the operation.

The resulting controversy has created conflicting accounts about who authorized the effort and how much senior campaign officials knew.

While the reported activities have intensified political criticism, recruiting an additional candidate is not automatically a violation of election law.

Whether any particular conduct crossed a legal boundary remains a separate question from whether the tactics were politically appropriate.

Justice Department Challenges Alaska Election Procedures

The Trump administration had already taken legal action over the Alaska ballot before the latest allegations surfaced.

The Department of Justice filed a federal lawsuit seeking to prevent certification of the election results under certain circumstances.

Specifically, the administration challenged a possible outcome in which Peltola defeats the Republican incumbent by fewer votes than those received by the other Sullivan.

The legal dispute highlights the complications created when two candidates share nearly identical names.

Alaska’s Supreme Court previously ruled that the second Sullivan could remain on the ballot.

Meanwhile, Alaska election officials and other parties have argued against the federal government’s attempt to intervene in the certification process.

Legal experts have questioned whether the newly reported campaign communications would provide sufficient grounds to change the ballot or prevent certification.

For now, the two Sullivan candidates and Peltola remain part of the election contest.

Why Alaska’s Senate Election Could Be Critical

The controversy comes at a particularly important moment for Republicans.

The GOP currently holds a 53-47 Senate majority, and Democrats are looking for opportunities to gain seats in the November 3 midterm elections.

Alaska has emerged as one of the competitive races that could influence which party controls the chamber.

Peltola previously represented Alaska in the U.S. House and has demonstrated an ability to compete in a traditionally Republican-leaning state.

Sullivan, meanwhile, is seeking to defend his seat as Republicans attempt to maintain their majority.

Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system adds another dimension to the contest.

Under the system, voters can rank multiple candidates in order of preference. If no candidate secures the required majority of first-choice votes, ballots are redistributed through additional rounds.

That makes voter understanding of the candidates particularly important.

The presence of two individuals named Sullivan has consequently attracted attention from election officials, political campaigns, and voters.

Election Integrity Questions Grow Ahead of November 3

Trump’s demands have added urgency to an already heated political battle.

For Republicans, the newly reported recruitment effort raises questions about whether political operatives deliberately attempted to confuse voters.

For Democrats, the controversy has generated unwanted scrutiny during the final days of a closely contested campaign.

The legal system, however, must distinguish between aggressive political tactics and conduct that actually violates election law.

Some election law experts have argued that candidate recruitment, even when intended to influence another candidate’s prospects, can be legally permissible.

Others have raised concerns about how such tactics affect public confidence in elections.

The debate now extends beyond Alaska, touching on broader questions about campaign transparency and the integrity of the electoral process.

What Happens Next in Alaska?

With Election Day approaching, there may be limited opportunities for substantial changes to Alaska’s ballot.

Thousands of voters have already cast ballots, making any attempt to remove a candidate especially complicated.

The federal lawsuit remains an important part of the dispute, but Trump’s public demands do not themselves establish grounds for disqualification.

Meanwhile, Republican and Democratic campaigns are continuing their efforts to persuade voters in a race that could help determine Senate control.

The immediate political consequences of the investigation remain uncertain.

What is clear is that Alaska’s Senate race has become the center of a national controversy over election tactics just days before Americans head to the polls.

Whether the allegations influence the final result—or lead to further legal proceedings—remains to be seen.
