Former President Barack Obama is facing backlash from conservatives after making a high-profile appearance in Toronto with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney while President Donald Trump continues to lead the country.
Obama traveled to Canada to attend the 2026 Global Progress Action Summit, where global leaders gathered to discuss public policy, economic development, and international cooperation. Carney publicly welcomed Obama and praised his participation in conversations about building a stronger and more prosperous future.
The optics of the meeting immediately caught the attention of many Trump supporters, who questioned why foreign leaders continue to spotlight Obama even though President Trump is currently in office and implementing his America First agenda.
Among the most outspoken critics was conservative commentator Laura Loomer, a longtime ally of President Trump. Loomer argued that Obama’s meeting with world leaders was inappropriate and suggested it undermined the authority of the sitting president.

Her comments triggered a heated debate online. Supporters agreed that the meeting sent the wrong message at a time when President Trump is actively shaping U.S. foreign policy and restoring American strength on the world stage.
Others pushed back, noting that President Trump has also met with international leaders outside formal government settings, including his 2024 meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago.
Some social media users referenced the Logan Act, a rarely enforced law that restricts unauthorized diplomacy by private citizens. Legal analysts, however, point out that the statute has almost never been used and does not typically apply to public appearances or ceremonial meetings involving former presidents.
For many conservatives, the controversy highlights a larger concern: whether former presidents should maintain such a visible role on the international stage while a new administration is working to advance a very different vision for the country.
President Trump’s supporters argue that voters elected him to represent the United States and that foreign leaders should respect the decisions of the American people rather than elevating political figures whose policies were rejected at the ballot box.
As debate over Obama’s appearance continues, the episode underscores the sharp contrast between President Trump’s America First leadership and the globalist approach favored by many former Democratic officials.
