Wow! This is going to be quite pricey.
A major restoration project tied to Washington, D.C.’s historic landmarks is now underway as the Trump administration moves forward with plans to renovate and regild four iconic bronze statues surrounding the Lincoln Memorial.
The project, which carries a reported price tag of $5 million, is part of a broader effort to prepare the nation’s capital for America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations. Officials say the work will focus on restoring the famous “Arts of War” and “Arts of Peace” equestrian statues, which have stood near the Lincoln Memorial for decades.
The statues, known for their decorative gold detailing and historic significance, have gradually become weathered and faded over time. Conservation experts are now expected to fully restore the bronze sculptures while applying fresh layers of 23.75-karat gold leaf to damaged and worn sections.
According to federal contract records, the National Park Service awarded the restoration contract to Maryland-based The Guilder’s Studio, Inc. in April 2026. The project includes extensive bronze conservation work designed to preserve the monuments for future generations while improving their appearance ahead of major patriotic celebrations planned across the country.
Government documents describe the restoration as a “full conservation and regilding” effort involving all four monumental sculptures. Crews are expected to clean, repair, stabilize, and restore multiple areas that have deteriorated due to age and exposure to the elements.
Early reports suggested officials hoped to complete the restoration before July 4 festivities, though the current projected completion date extends into late September 2026.
The statue restoration is one of several large-scale beautification and preservation projects currently taking place across Washington, D.C. Reports reviewing federal spending data estimate that roughly $95 million has been allocated toward improvement projects in the nation’s capital between late 2025 and early 2026.
President Donald Trump has frequently discussed revitalizing Washington during his second term, often emphasizing the importance of preserving historic sites, improving tourism, and restoring iconic American landmarks.
Supporters of the restoration project argue that maintaining national monuments helps preserve American history while boosting tourism and civic pride. Others continue debating whether large government-funded restoration efforts should remain a priority amid broader economic concerns facing many Americans.
The project has also generated attention because of separate reports involving ongoing legal negotiations tied to TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance. Some media outlets have suggested that funds connected to a potential settlement could eventually support additional beautification efforts in Washington, although no official agreement has been finalized.
As the United States approaches its historic 250th anniversary, restoration projects like the Lincoln Memorial statue renovation are expected to play a major role in efforts to modernize, preserve, and showcase some of America’s most recognizable landmarks.
The renovations could also draw renewed public attention to the Lincoln Memorial area, one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country and a centerpiece of American history, culture, and national celebrations.
